What is Nature Based Learning?

shed.001.png

Nature Based Learning is a way of learning that offers children the opportunity to learn in, with and about nature through spontaneous, self-directed play. It primarily takes place in natural 'wild' outdoor spaces where children are encouraged to pursue their own lines of interest, inquiry and  play inspired by the sights, sounds, curiosities, challenges and changes that a natural unmanaged space offers.

Why Nature Based?

Children have a strong connection to nature and  Nature-based practice harnesses this affiliation. Out in 'wild' natural spaces, children are inspired and free to explore, discover and most importantly play! For those children who struggle in the confines of the indoor environment, this type of freedom and play-based learning can be truly liberating and hugely impactful on their development. For all children, it can lead to the development of a whole host of core skills as well as offer a plethora of benefits on wellbeing and all round health.

Nature Based Learning also provides children with opportunities for adventure, challenge and risk. In increasingly risk-averse times, these opportunities can be few and far between which could be doing more harm than good. At Bobblewood, we offer children chances for daring and challenge, for exposure to risk and hazards knowing it will support them in becoming competent risk-assessors and in developing positive learning dispositions.
